I have recently fallen in love with a traditional Russian Orthodox piece called “Всего-то навсего.” (Roughly translated, that means something along the lines of, “It’s only” or “Simply.”)
It is a song of faith. A song of hope. A song of love. A song of relying on the Lord and overcoming through Him. A song of encouragement to continue in life—to fulfill your calling down unbeaten paths despite the scorn of others. A promise that doing small acts of goodness will give you a new perspective on life.
Simply love
With your heart--light a candle!
Then, as a fish in the river’s depths,
Above you will see new heights.
Simply don’t judge,
As the spitting crowd judges God.
Your calling is to go forward
On paths as yet unbeaten by you.
Simply love,
Caress someone small!
Then as the free eagle in the desert.
Beneath you will see new depths.
Simply don’t grieve
That trouble with sorrows are in the fate,
But gratitude all your life bring,
To Him who gave you life.
Simply love.
Simply don’t judge.
Simply don’t be sad.
Simply forgive all!

I love the dichotomy that I feel this song highlights. There is sorrow in life. There is pain. Once in a while, we will encounter mocking crowds who don't understand our faith or our calling. There are times when we will descend through deep waters. But there are times when we will soar high above the earth. And our joy and comprehension of heights gives us to understand pain. And it is in the depths that we understand the meaning of joy. Because life, with its pain and sorrow and heights and depths is ultimately a priceless gift from our great Creator.
And I am grateful for that gift.
